In general, color-changing filament represents thermochromism in 3D printing. This means that the color of the material changes based on its temperature. Materials utilize this phenomenon through Leuco dyes used in color-changing items.
In addition, using Leuco dyes will help you achieve a gradient from warmer (lighter) to colder colors (darker). In the 3D printing industry, Leuco dyes are combined with the filament giving 3D manufacturers the ability to add all kinds of effects to their prints.
IIID MAX Color-Changing Filament
There is a repetitive process that we perform to create one of the best 3D filaments in the printing industry. There is a mix of raw materials (PLA+, PETG, ASA, etc) with your favorite 3D masterbatches to achieve the best 3D filament colors.
Our USA factory production lines work non-stop during production hours. We run a calculated and automated schedule of what colors to produce according to market demand. In addition, even if we have to switch from one color to another, assembly lines won’t stop.
This means that during this process, there will be some rolls that won’t be the perfect HEX colors we offer. These are the rolls that we market as color-changing filaments. This process might take up to 6 or 7 rolls to get to the perfect HEX color.
What You Will Get
When you purchase color-changing filaments, you will find that some of the rolls will have crystal clear filament mixed with other colors.
We use crystal clear filament because it allows us to efficiently test our color-changing filament process. In the picture below, you can notice a mix of red filament and pink filament.
Color-Changing in PETG & PLA Filament
We offer PETG and PLA filament series, these two are manufactured under the same processes. This means that both materials will eventually go through a color-changing process, resulting in the color-changing filament. You cannot select a specific color-changing filament. These are random color selections of fine PETG or PLA spools.
Color Change filament spools are not rainbow colors or a color that changes to another.
